Have you ever witnessed someone’s fowl behavior and wondered how the person was able to behave in this manner without acknowledgement?
It’s quite possible.
Self awareness is a sophisticated way of thinking, and for those who “know themselves,” their awareness likely resulted from therapy or a consequence that forced the person to look inside themselves.
Ironically, self awareness without knowledge of what to do next can be torture lol
If you are privy to your flaws but have no recourse, it can be frustrating, and by human behavior standards, you will likely make the same mistake.
This is where the skillful aid of a mental health provider may fare as useful.
The freedom of self-awareness is that it supports change.
It can release burdens of pain that we may carry as far back as our childhood that currently impacts our adult lives.
Self searching can also be scary and uncertain.
Our natural defense mechanisms avoid anxiety and distress at all cost, sometimes hurting others or ourselves to ironically avoid hurt.
Often this causes people to end up in cycles of bad relationships and bad behavior.
Overall, it is dangerous to assume that people are fully aware of themselves because at times you may not be aware of your own bad behavior.
Additionally, if your behavior affords you to get your way, in turn intimidating others to shy away from confrontation, then why change?
You get to remain within the comfort of familiarity enjoying that people dare not “ try” you.
This is why it’s beneficial to have honest people around who will risk your wrath to supportively confront bad/hurtful behavior.
Additionally, depending on the relationship you have with that person, you have a choice to allow that person to continue their path, while you walk away and continue on your own.
We can’t always assume people " know better," so we must exercise our power to hold others accountable and speak on your own standards and expectations....again if necessary and if the person holds such importance in your life.
Lastly, in the name of self-awareness, consider that you may be the common denominator and try to seek how you are contributing to either the problem or the resolve.
